Selogriyo Temple
Situated on the slopes of Mount Sumbing just a few hours’ drive from Yogyakarta, Selogriyo Temple may be a small and relatively unknown temple, but for many, the trek through picturesque rural landscape to reach it is reward enough.
This ancient Hindu temple is nestled off the beaten track with views that stretch for miles. The light hike to reach Selogriyo takes around two hours and leads through rice paddy fields and lush vegetation. From Selogriyo, visitors are rewarded with views of Mount Sumbing shrouded in mist to the west, and green terraces and mountain peaks beyond in the east.
The temple itself is relatively modest and the history of it unknown. It features an empty chamber known as the garbhagriha, which is said to have contained a lingam and yoni, representing Shiva Mahadeva and Goddess Shakti – although some believe that the chamber was simply used for meditation.
