Sewu Temple
Located just north of the renowned Hindu temple, Prambanan, Sewu is an 8th century Buddhist temple complex. The grand scale of the site suggests that it served as a royal Buddhist temple, and today it stands as one of the largest and most significant religious sites in Java.
Sewu Temple can be found within the grounds of the Prambanan Temple, with clear signs pointing the way along a path shaded by trees. There are a number of temples to see on the way to the site, although none are as well-preserved as Sewu, which has been restored over the years with a particularly high attention to detail.
The temple itself features a main room at its center surrounded by four smaller rooms. These four rooms are connected by doorways and corner galleries adorned with rows of stupas. The structure has nine roofs in total, each narrowing into a stupa on top.
