The Ullen Sentalu museum is a surprise find on the slopes of Merapi. This large complex has a principal structure that resembles a Bavarian baron’s mansion, which is surrounded by extensive gardens. Most of the rich collection of Javanese fine art, including oil paintings and sculpture, is housed in connecting underground chambers. There are wonderful artefacts to admire (including some priceless batik), but perhaps a little too much royal family glorification during the hour-long tour. Guests are admitted in groups, every ten minutes.
