Munduk Waterfall
About 2km east of Munduk, look for signs for this waterfall (aka Tanah Braak) along the road. Though the signs say the trail is 700m long, it seems to be an underestimate. This is the easiest waterfall to access in the area without a map or guide.

Gua Wikuda
Gua Wikuda is said to be several kilometres long, with an underground river that reaches Danau Anegerak. Its possible to visit about the first hundred metres of the cave which has a few stalagmites and tights. Ask for the lights to be turned on.

Sasana Budaya Giri Kusuma
Supposedly a showplace for Balinese dance, drama, gamelan and the visual arts, this large arts centre is mostly quiet. But its well maintained, so its worth popping by in case one of the large ceremonies held here is on, or just to admire the grounds.

Pulau Palambak
Rather out of the way, this medium-sized island is covered in coconut trees, has a couple of jungle paths you can walk and a gorgeous stretch of beach. The snorkelling is not great, though, since the coral has been largely destroyed by dynamite fishing.

Royal Carriage
Opposite the kraton , the Royal Carriage-House Museum contains the throne of Queen Tirtonegoro and a Chinese-style bed, which is reputedly 300 years old. On the first Sunday of the month, traditional dance or gamelan practice is held at the kraton .

Pulau Pagang
Pulau Pagang is a beautiful small island, 1½-hours offshore from Bungus, with white sandy beaches and a handful of basic bungalows. It’s possible to rent a boat from Bungus and stay the night. Ask at Tin Tin Homestay, or among the local fishermen.

Silk Weaving Workshops
Sengkang is known for its sutera (silk) weaving industry. Silk-weaving workshops are found around 5km out of town, and the nearest silkworm farms are about 15km from Sengkang. Hotels can organise trips, or you can charter a pete-pete from the terminal.

Pura Batur
Spiritually, Gunung Batur is the second-most important mountain in Bali (only Gunung Agung outranks it), so the temple, Pura Batur, is of considerable importance. Its a great stop for the architectural spectacle. Within the complex is a Taoist shrine.

Gua Sunyaragi
Approximately 4km southwest of town is this bizarre grotto of rocks, red brick and plaster, honeycombed with secret chambers, tiny doors and staircases that lead nowhere. It was originally a water palace for a sultan of Cirebon in the early 18th century.

Echo Beach
Surfers and those who watch them flock here for the high-tide left-hander that regularly tops 2m. The greyish sand right in front of the developments can vanish at high tide, but youll find wide strands east and west. Batu Bolong beach is 500m east.

Benteng Victoria
Undramatic Benteng Victoria (out of bounds due to army use) is a Dutch-era fortress. The site of Indonesian national hero Pattimuras hanging, it’s fronted by a gilded statue of Slamet Riyadi, an Indonesian commander who died retaking the place in 1950.

Lampung Provincial Museum
This museum, 5km north of central Tanjungkarang, is a bit of a mixed bag, with everything from neolithic relics to stuffed animals. The few articles from the Sriwajayan empire era are worth a peek. To reach the museum, catch a grey angkot (3500Rp).

Lombongo Hot Springs
Seventeen kilometres east of Gorontalo, at the western edge of Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park, this large swimming pool is filled with hot-spring water. Theres also a swimming hole at the foot of a 30m waterfall; its a 3km walk past the springs.

Sun Tien Kong Chinese Temple
The 300-year-old Sun Tien Kong Chinese Temple is testament to the ancient Chinese involvement in the Banda spice trade. Ask at the antique shop across the road for the key, or youll have to glimpse its dim, lantern-lit interior through round, latticed windows.

Adityawarman Museum
Adityawarman Museum, built in the Minangkabau tradition, has pleasant grounds and the exhibits are a thorough introduction to everyday Minangkabau life. A healthy imagination helps, since the exhibits are in Bahasa Indonesia. The entrance is on Jl Gereja.

Samboja Lestari
A Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation project, Samboja Lestari houses around 200 orangutans and 50 sun bears. Half day tours (9am to 1pm and 2pm to 8pm, reserve ahead) show off the centres residents and accomplishments; or stay overnight at the stunning lodge.

Nyoman Suaka Home
This home, which is 50m off the main road, is just south of the huge banyan tree. Pass through the old carved entrance to the walled family compound and youll discover a classic Balinese home, which you can explore while the family goes about its daily business.

Masjid Sultan Suriansyah
Though it marks the first Islamic place of worship in Borneo, the beautiful angular wooden building was reconstructed in 1746, leaving the oldest physical mosque accolade to Banua Lawas from the Tabalong Regency (1625). Take a Kuin angkot to the end of the line.

Kemala Beach
A clean, white-sand beach with adjacent cafes and restaurants, and a laid-back vibe. If you need a break from the jungle (urban or natural) this is your best local option. Although it gets hot at midday, you probably wont want to swim in the polluted waters.

Hilisimaetano
There are more than 100 traditional houses in this large village, 16km northwest of Teluk Dalam. Stone jumping and traditional dancing are performed here during special events. Hilisimaetano can be reached by infrequent public transport from Teluk Dalam (7000Rp).
