Zoological Museum
This museum has a motley but interesting collection of dusty zoological oddities, including the skeleton of a blue whale, giant stick insects, beetles as big as tennis balls and a pooch-sized Flores rat.

Adis Gallery
Many of the better local artists display their works here. Adis hosts occasional special events like live music and many popular special exhibits. The gallery is a project of German artist Adi Bachmann.

Balai Kota
Close to the city centre, the Balai Kota is an immense Dutch administrative building, built in a hybrid of Dutch and Indonesian architectural styles with a tiered central roof that resembles a Javanese mosque.

Pasar Syketeng
Rise early and hit the steamy, exotic Pasar Syketeng. Its dank alleyways come alive as young and old descend to barter and haggle for every conceivable item, from fish to household goods to live chickens.

Project Penyu
Run by Reef Seen Divers Resort, this nonprofit turtle hatchery project collects turtle eggs, which are looked after until they’re ready for ocean release. More than 7000 turtles have been released since 1994.

Musium Bung Karno
History buffs can visit Sukarno’s wood-shuttered house of exile (1934–38). Most of the original period furnishings remain. This is where the beloved revolutionary penned the Frankenstein knock-off, Doctor Satan .

Bukittinggi Museum
A footbridge crosses over Jl Ahmad Yani from Benteng de Kock to Taman Bundo Kandung. Within the leafy park is the Bukittinggi Museum, constructed in 1934 in Minangkabau style. The adjacent zoo is just depressing.

Pulau Tikus
Reachable from Bengkulu via a 30- to 40-minute boat ride, this small island is surrounded by coral reef, making it an excellent snorkelling destination. It’s 15km west of Bengkulu; get a fishing boat to take you out here.

Pandai Sikat
Pandai Sikat (Clever Craftsmen) is famous for songket (silver- or gold-threaded cloth) weaving and carving building decorations out of wood. The village is 13km south of Bukittinggi. Take an angkot (5000Rp) from Aur Kuning.

Kebun Balawan
Visits through this coffee plantation include a wander through coffee groves and an impromptu tour of the plantation’s factory. It also has thermal pools and a gushing thermal waterfall (5000Rp) set amid lush jungle.

Gong Workshop
Home industry at its finest, this is one of the few remaining gongsmiths in Java, where you can see gamelan instruments smelted over a charcoal fire by hand. A few pricey gongs and wayang golek puppets are on sale.

Gereja Blenduk
Gereja Blenduk, built in 1753, is an elegant church with a huge cupola, a spectacular baroque-style organ and an unusual wooden pulpit. Knock on the door and the caretaker will let you in; services are still held here.

Pantai Pasir Putih
About 5km east of town, this 600m curve of clean white sand and clear water is good for swimming, and snorkelling if you have gear. It’s generally quiet – except on Sunday when half of Manokwari invades the beach.

Pantai Kartini
The most popular beach is Pantai Kartini, 3km west of town – locals often call it Pemandian. From there you can rent a boat (around 150,000Rp return) to nearby Pulau Panjang, which has excellent white-sand beaches.

Ministry of Finance Building
Next door to the Supreme Court is the Ministry of Finance Building, formerly the Witte Huis (White House). This grand government complex was built by Daendels in 1809 as the administrative centre for the Dutch government.

Tanah Aron
This imposing monument to the post-WWII Dutch resistance is gloriously situated on the southeastern slopes of Gunung Agung. The road is quite good, or you can walk up and back in about six hours from Tirta Gangga.

Watchtower
Just before the entrance to the museum is a watchtower, built in 1839 to sight and direct traffic to the port. There are good views over the harbour, but opening hours are haphazard – ask for the caretaker if it is closed.

Sungai Wain
In the mid-90s, 82 orangutans were released in this protected forest, but fires and illegal logging have taken their toll. Get a 6am start to maximise wildlife viewing. Take angkot 8 to Km15 (6000Rp), and an ojek 6km west.

Mesjid Hatta
Behind the main port is the eye-catching minaret of the Mesjid Hatta-Syahrir. Some locals claim this was converted into a mosque from the mansion that first accommodated Hatta and Syahrir on their arrival in 1936.

Gembira Loka Zoo
Yogya’s Gembira Loka Zoo , about 5km east of Jl A Yani, has its fair share of cramped cages, but on the whole it is spacious and has some interesting exotica such as some Komodo dragons, which are successfully breeding.
