Dara Janti Museum
Across the river, the former sultans palace is now Dara Janti Museum. The keeper will open it for a small donation. Boats to cross congregate beyond the riverfront warungs (food stalls).

Factory
The Garut region is famed for its dodol – a confectionery of coconut milk, palm sugar and sticky rice. The Picnic brand is the best quality, and it is possible to visit the factory in town.

Danau Linow
Danau Linow, a small, highly sulphurous lake that changes colours with the light, is home to extensive birdlife. Take a mikrolet to Sonder, get off at Lahendong and walk 1.5km to the lake.

Grand Bali Beach Hotel
Built in the Sukarno-era, this vast hotel is now slowly fading away. Local leaders, properly horrified at its outsized bulk, imposed the famous rule that no building could be higher than a coconut palm.

Museum
Sangiran’s main (well, only) attraction is its small museum, with a few skulls (one of Homo erectus ), various pig and hippopotamus teeth, and fossil exhibits, including huge mammoth bones and tusks.

Agung Rai Gallery
This gallery is in a pretty compound and its collection covers the full range of Balinese styles. It functions as a cooperative, with the work priced by the artist and the gallery adding a percentage.

Pulau Kumala
While the future of this island amusement park is uncertain, a boat trip and stroll to the huge lembuswana at the tip is a worthwhile outing. Boats (per person 20,000Rp) leave 100m from Keraton.

Pasar
Don’t miss the lively, sprawling market, a vital lifeline for villagers in the surrounding hills. Much of it is underground – look for the entrance next to the supermarket.

Pura Dalem Agung
Nestled in the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, the interesting Pura Dalem Agung has a real Indiana Jones feel to it; the entrance to the inner temple features Rangda figures devouring children.

Royal Mosque
On the 27th evening of Ramadan, Lailat-ul-Qadr celebrations see the sultan’s procession arrive to a mass of flaming torches at the Royal Mosque, which has impressive heavy interior timber work.

Mesjid Raya
The impressive Grand Mosque was commissioned by the sultan in 1906. The Moroccan-style building has a grand entrance, towering ceilings, ornate carvings, Italian marble and stained glass from China.

Taman Anggrek Clara Bundt
Taman Anggrek Clara Bundt is a sanctuary hidden behind the Bundt family home. It contains exotic hybrids (some up to 5m high). Theres also a verdant fruit orchard and an extensive shell collection.

Museum Negeri Propinsi Jambi
Museum Negeri Propinsi Jambi, one of the city’s few attractions, is out in Telanaipura. It has a selection of costumes and handicrafts, as well as a small historical display. Take an ojek (4000Rp).

Berawa Beach
Greyish Berawa Beach has a couple of surfer cafes by the pounding sea. The grey volcanic sand here slopes steeply into foaming water, and overlooking it all is the vast estate of fashionista Paul Ropp.

Tomb of Sultan Agung
This tomb is of major interest to pilgrims. Visitors can join the pilgrims at these specified times, although to enter the tombs you must don full Javanese court dress, which can be hired for a small fee.

Makatita Hall
Makatita Hall occupies the site of the former Harmonie Club (aka ‘the Soc’) that once boasted seven snooker tables and was the focus of colonial-era social events. Now its home to chickens and furtive graffiti.

Double Six Beach
The beach becomes less crowded as you go north from Legian until very popular Double Six Beach, which is alive with pick-up games of football and volleyball all day long. Its a good place to meet locals.

Yabaso
An inexpensive way to explore the lake is to stroll 3km southeast along Jl Yabaso from the airport gate. The road (then path) goes through Yabaso village and continues around the lake past several villages.
