Martha Christina Tiahahu Statue
The Martha Christina Tiahahu statue is worth the around Rp7000 ojek -ride if only for the wonderful views. Stop at the delightful Panorama Café en route for more such views.

Dutch Fort
The remains of a late 18th-century Dutch fort, occupied today by the Indonesian army, can be seen to the north of Jl Merdeka. Only sections of the fort’s outside walls still stand.

Small mosque located at the west end of Padangbai, near the post office.

Pantai Lakeba
About 7km from central Bau Bau, this is where youll find white sand, shady coconut palms, lightly rolling waves and a fantastic beach restaurant serving local specialities.

Pasalat
Pasalat is a reforestation camp where saplings of sandalwood, ironwood and other native trees are being reintroduced to counteract the effects of logging, mining and fires.

Pasar Atas
Pasar Atas is a large, colourful market crammed with stalls selling fruit and vegetables, secondhand clothing and crafts. It’s open daily. Find it on the east side of Jl Minangkabau.

Sembungan
South of the geothermal station, the paved road leads on to Sembungan, said to be the highest village in Java, at 2300m. Potato farming has made this large village relatively wealthy.

Djarum Kretek Factory
Djarum, opened in 1951, is the main employer in town and third-biggest kretek manufacturer in Indonesia. Ninety-minute tours of its modern factory are available between 8am and 11am.

Pantai Maimol
The best beach near Kalabahi is this ribbon of white sand 10km out of town on the airport road. You can easily laze away a few hours here. Plans are in the works for a bungalow resort.

Pakualaman Kraton
This small museum includes a pendopo (large, open-sided pavilion) that can hold a full gamelan orchestra, and a curious colonial house. Outside opening times you can explore the grounds.

Pura Puncak Penulisan
Near the road junction at Penilusan, several steep flights of steps lead to Balis highest temple, Pura Puncak Penulisan (1745m). Some of the sculptures date back to the 11th century.

Pantai Lorari
Pantai Lorari is a kilometre-long promenade that stretches south to Masjid Amirul Mukminin, the floating mosque. Its a good place to catch some sea air and mingle with snacking families.

Pantai Ketewel
One of the first beaches youll encounter off the coast road, Ketewel is known for its surfing, which demands advanced skills; its a tricky reef-rocky right. Come here to surf – or watch.

Lemba Harau
Lemba Harau and other waterfalls in the Harau Valley attract daytrippers from Bukittinggi, particularly during the rainy season; if the weather’s been dry, they’re reduced to mere trickles.

Pulau Sebuku & Pulau Sebesi
Situated off the coast, Pulau Sebuku and Pulau Sebesi have snorkelling and swimming. Cargo boats leave from Canti to these islands, or you can charter a tour from the local fisherfolk.

Beach
Around 20km south of Tentena the lovely golden beach by the Siuri Cottages has great swimming with a water temperature of around 26°C year-round). Theres a restaurant for lunch and drinks.
