Looking like a streamlined boat pointed towards the ocean, this now high-tech, stylised aquarium was once a rural tourist attraction in decline, until a Nobel Prize–winning scientist who discovered a fluorescent protein in belt jellyfish, taught the aquarium how to make jellyfish glow. The rest is history. Inside over 35 species of pulsing, luminous Aequorea coerulescens put on a surreal show.
From Tsuruoka station, take the bus bound for Yunohama-onsen and get off at the Kamo Suizokukan stop (30 minutes).
