Said to have been founded in AD 201, this peaceful, wooded shrine has played a key role in sake brewing history, survived civil wars and WWII, and been a gathering place for residents after natural disasters such as the 1995 earthquake. Its forest and landmark camphor tree are great for a break from the city's bustle.
