Head up into the hills to the volcanic peak of Mt Shirane, famous for its striking milky-green sulphur Yugama crater lake . A bus runs from Kusatsu Station (¥2000 return, 30 minutes) up the steep, winding road to the Shirane Resthouse, from where it's a 15-minute stair climb to the lake.
