The Kumamoto Prefectural Museum of Art's postmodern Chibajo Annexe was built in 1992 by the Spanish architects Elias Torres and José Antonio Martínez-Lapeña as part of the Artpolis urban reconstruction project, and is recognised by architects worldwide.
