Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo

You'll know the Museum of Contemporary Art immediately by its distinctive, slightly foreboding gray geometric entrance way. The enormous building is a work of art in its own right and is one of the city's most distinctive landmarks. It was created by artist Yanagisawa Takahiko and features stone, steel and wood materials in a design that incorporates modernist, neo-classical and post-modern industrial styles.

Inside you'll find over 3500 pieces of twentieth and twenty-first century art. The work is by both famous international artists like Andy Warhol and David Hockney as well as Japanese artists like Yokō Tadanori. The temporary exhibitions are often considered the real attraction and feature touring exhibitions from around the world.

Practical Info

There are four subway stations that access the museum:
Iyosumi-Shirakawa station (on the Hanzomon line) which is a 9 minute walk from the B2 exit. Kiyosumi-Shirakawa station (on the Toei Oedo line) is a 13 minute walk from the A3 exit. Kiba station (on the Tozai line) is a 15 minute walk from the #3 exit. Or the Kikukawa station (on the Toei Shinjuku line) is a 15 minuted walk from exit A4.
