If you have time, consider taking Route 51 all the way to Kuala Pilah, a pretty town with rows of colorful Chinese shophouses and one of Malaysia’s most interesting Chinese temples, the Sansheng Gong. The temple was the first in the country dedicated to Guan Gong, sometimes referred to as the god of war, and is adorned with painted mortar figures and wood sculpture.
To the right as you enter the temple look for a shrine featuring the two guards who escort the spirits of dead to the underworld. Dua Di Ya Peh , as they are known, are also worshipped as fortune gods in Malaysia, and you will see offerings of stout beer and cigarettes laid before them.
Across the road from the temple is a pailou (archway) dedicated to Martin Lister, the first British Resident (1889–97) of Negeri Sembilan.
