About an hour from KK (20km), a visit to this zoo offers a chance to see Sabah's creatures if you are unable to spot them in their natural environment. We warn you, however, that the tiger and sun bear enclosures are lamentably bare and small, and the orangutans are made to peel coconuts for tourists. Other animals including tarsiers, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants and rhinoceros hornbills, as well as a train which carts you around the park (RM2).
Bring plenty of water, hats and snacks (there's no shop in the park but there is a store outside), and order a cab from your hotel. It should cost around RM130 there and back, plus waiting time. The 20A minibus goes to Lok Kawi (RM2). Visitors with a private vehicle can access the park via the Papar–Penampang road or the Putatan–Papar road.
