Lat Cartoon Sculptures
The cartoonist known as Lat (his real name is Mohammad Nor Khalid) is a beloved figure in Malaysian media. The quartet of life-sized sculptures along this street are based on his humourous characters.

Boh Tea Estate
You can also visit other tea estates, but guided tours are usually given only for organised groups. One exception is this, southeast of Tanah Rata and 8km off the main road up to the Highlands.

Ibrahim Hussein Foundation Museum
The Ibrahim Hussein Foundation Museum displays the abstract and multimedia works of its founder and namesake. It’s good art, especially if you need a break from traditional batik-work and the like.

Sungai Lembing
Visit Sungai Lembing to take in a small regional museum (RM2) that covers local mining history back and forth, or head into the hills for a claustrophobic tour of neighboring mines (RM15 to RM30).

Cat Column
On the roundabout, the Cat Column features four cats around the bottom and four Rafflesia flowers near the top – the latter are just below the cat-adorned shield of the South Kuching municipality.

Orchid Conservation Centre
Part of the Poring Hot Springs complex, this centre boasts 1200 species of orchid, unbelievably all of which are found within Kinabalu Park. Its the largest collection of the species endemic to Sabah.

Foo Ling Kong
With its brightly coloured bridges, cartoonish tiger statues and souvenir stands, this inland temple almost has the vibe of a theme park. Donations are encouraged; place them in the tin sentrymen at the entrance.

Museum Garden
The landscaped Museum Garden stretches south from the hill, leading past flowers and fountains to a white-and-gold column called the Heroes’ Monument , which commemorates those who died defending Sarawak.

Cineblast & 4D Magix
Cineblast is a simulation ride that simulates a variety of high-speed experiences, and 4D Magix is a state-of-the-art theatre offering the latest in movie magic. Children should especially enjoy both experiences.

Mountain Garden
Many of the plants found on Mt Kinabalu and in Kinabalu National Park are cultivated in the Mountain Garden behind the visitors centre. Guided tours of the garden depart at 9am, noon and 3pm and cost RM5.

Lagenda Langkawi Dalam Taman
A landscaped ‘folklore theme park’ that stretches along the waterfront. Bright statues dotted amid the lakes illustrate several Langkawi legends, with signboards in English. It’s a popular spot for joggers.

Nipah
Beautiful, rugged and isolated, Nippah is an amazing choice for those wanting to bliss out on Tioman’s serenest beach. The waters of Nippah are home to phosphorescent seaweed, and actually glow at night.

Fountain of Wealth
Declared the Worlds Largest Fountain (though not Most Attractive) in the Guinness Book of Records . For good luck, youll need to walk around the central base three times, touching the water at all times.

Town Hall
Ipoh’s gleaming white town hall dates back to 1916 and is a popular spot for wedding photo shoots. Visitors are often allowed to wander inside; the upper floor has good views of the colonial train station.

Clifford School
The Clifford School is a grand public building that began life as the Anglo-Chinese School in 1913. During the occupation, the school served as the headquarters of the Kempetai (the Japanese secret police).

8Q SAM
Round the corner from the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) is its younger sibling, named after its address. Snoop around four floors of contemporary art, from quirky installations and video art to mixed-media statements.

History & Ethnography Museum
Housed inside the Stadthuys is the nicely presented and extensive History & Ethnography Museum , which has a number of historical re-creations as well as displays of Chinese and Malay art, weapons and ceramics.

Galeri Petronas
Swap consumerism for culture at this excellent art gallery showcasing contemporary photography and paintings. It’s a bright, modern space with interesting, professionally curated shows that change every few months.

Chimney
Believed to be part of an old coal-mining station, this is the only historical monument of its kind in Malaysia, and has good views along the coast. Its at the northeast tip of the island, best accessed by minibus or taxi.
