A unique cultural experience in Ulaanbaatar is a visit to the studios of the Mongolian National Artists Union. The artists are welcoming and you can offer to buy their work on the spot. It’s all in a hard-to-find blue building set off the road, behind a gas station; look for the bronze statue of a seated monk above the door. Inside it’s a bit of a maze and all the doors are closed so it’s best to bring a guide or Mongolian friend. The Arts Council of Mongolia conducts tours here for US$25 per group of five.
