A third monastery is 21km south of the two at Ongiin Khiid, but very little remains of it, save a scattering of broken brickwork and Chinese pottery.

Khasagt Khairkhan Strictly Protected Area
Khasagt Khairkhan Strictly Protected Area (27,448 hectares) The area protects endangered argali sheep and the Mongol Altai mountain environment.

Ovoon Khiid
In the village you can visit the small Ovoon Khiid, which was built in 1990 (and probably not repainted since) and is served by a handful of monks.

Cultural Palace
The tall, modern Palace of Culture is a useful landmark containing the Mongolian National Modern Art Gallery and several other cultural institutions.

Yakovlev Сhuudiin Tank Khoshuu
The most impressive of socialist masterpiece memorials, Yakolevchudiin Tank Khoshuu is a Soviet tank on a pedestal, located 23km northwest of the town.

Stone Monuments
A fun horseback trek takes you to some Turkic Stone Monuments southwest of the park and then on to Tuul Gol. Horse rental is US$12 per day. Contact the park for details.

Morin Khuur Statue & Seated Buddha
These two monuments, linked by a pedestrian bridge across a busy road, are near the roundabout between the new and old towns. Locals come here to socialise at sunset.

Small Gobi A Strictly Protected Area
Small Gobi A Strictly Protected Area (1,839,176 hectares). On the border with China, includes dunes and saxaul forest. Last great bastion of the khulan (wild ass).

Seated Buddha
One of two new monuments across the road from each other, near the roundabout between the new and old towns. Both are congregating points for locals who hang out here at sunset.

Yalaltiin Khoshuu
The 10m-high Yalaltiin Khoshuu, just outside Khalkh Gol, feaures a stylised Mongolian maiden on one side and grim-faced Soviet and Mongolian soldiers side by side on the reverse.

Mogoi Mod
Check out the Mogoi Mod, 4km from town, past the defunct airport, towards Jankhai Davaa (Jankhai Pass). This tree, which curves into a unique spiral, is honoured with hadak (ritual scarves).

Dayan Derkh Monastery
Set on a beautiful bend of the Uur Gol, the Dayan Derkh Monastery, consists of a log cabin temple, rebuilt in 2006 over the remains of an older monastery, and is home to a half-dozen lamas.

Gelenkhuugiin Suvraga
An old stupa built in 1890 by local hero Khainzan Gelenkhuu (1870–1937), who leapt off a 200m cliff with a set of sheepskin wings and flew as if he were some kind of Icarus-incarnate.

Gurvan Saikhan National Park
Gurvan Saikhan National Park (2,000,000 hectares) Wealth of sand dunes, canyons, dinosaur fossils and mountainous terrain. Desert wildlife includes argali sheep, ibex and snow leopard.

Terelj Village
Terelj Village is about 27km from the park entrance, at the end of a paved road. Its in a nice location near the river but theres not much here apart from a few shops, a café and a ger camp.

Ergeliin Zuu
Ergeliin Zuu (90,910 hectares), in the south of the province, is a small protected area that has interesting rock formations and palaeontology sites that include 30-million-year-old mammalian fossils.

Ulaan Uulyn Rashaan
Just outside of town on the south side of Ulaan Uul (Red Mountain), a small spring draws a steady crowd of picnicking locals who come here to drink the medicinal water and knock back vodka shots.

Statue of S Zorig
Across from the Central Post Office (CPO) is a statue of S Zorig, who at the age of 27 helped to lead the protests that brought down communism in 1990 (and was tragically assassinated in 1998).

Toroi
This seated figure is the Robin Hood of Mongolia, who stole horses from the local Manchurian rulers, then eluded them by hiding near Shiliin Bogd Uul. The statue, dedicated in 1999, pointedly faces China.

Parliament House
Behind the Chinggis Khaan Statue stands Parliament House, which is commonly known as Government House. An inner courtyard of the building holds a large ceremonial ger used for hosting visiting dignitaries.
