Former Myanmar Railways Headquarters

Train travel was first introduced in Myanmar around 1877, when the British developed a 163-mile line between Yangon and Pyay. Today, visitors can tour the three colonial buildings and lush tropical gardens that make up the original railway headquarters in Yangon.

Constructed in 1896, the original Burma Railways building remains an imposing—but impressive—nod to the nation’s colonial heritage. Its distinctive Victorian architecture incorporates Gothic details and local materials, making it a truly unique structure in the heart of the city. The area near the railway headquarters is not part of a major redevelopment initiative. The main building was sold to developers in 2012 and will become part of a luxury five-star hotel around 2015.
