As parks go, the Maryknoll Sanctuary, located about 25 minutes outside of downtown Baguio, is nice enough. There’s 2.8 hectares of preserved forest – pretty, peaceful if not particularly striking. What does wow us about Maryknoll is the ‘Cosmic Journey’, a pathway that threads through a series of art installations that measures the evolution of humanity in the Philippines via hill tribe artefacts, surreal sculpture and a maximum amount of New Age discourse. Appreciating this ‘journey’ almost inevitably involves bridging a cultural gap; most Filipinos find the journey reverential, while most foreigners tend to find it kitschy in the extreme.
