This is a Diocesan Ecclesiastical Museum , the only one in Mindanao, at the convent of St Joseph Cathedral. It commemorates missionary work in the region. Like Limasawa in Leyte, Butuan claims the honour of the first mass (8 April 1521) held by Magellan on Philippine soil at nearby Magallanes , north of the city at the mouth of the Agusan River where it empties into Butuan Bay; a memorial marks the spot.
