Lake Danao Natural Park
A good day trip from Ormoc is to Lake Danao Natural Park, a beautiful body of fresh water in the hills 18km from town. Theres some great hiking around the lake and on and around the undermaintained Leyte Mountain Trail.

Blood Compact Monument
This great monument 1km east of Tagbilaran celebrates the March 1565 blood compact, where Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi and Boholano chieftain Rajah Sikatuna shared a cup of each other’s blood as a peace treaty.

Memorare Manila
This simple but moving outdoor memorial in a small shady square honours the approximately 150,000 civilian Manileños who perished in the Battle of Manila. A few faded placards nearby contain before-and-after photos of the city.

Maria Cristina Falls
Even though the twin Maria Cristina Falls are being harnessed for their hydroelectric power, you can climb to the top of an observation tower for excellent views (there’s a small zipline, an eatery and a crocodile park at the base).

Hiraya Gallery
This long-established gallery has a museum-quality selection of Filipino contemporary art. Names to look out for are Leonard Aguinaldo, Norberto Carating and Eric Guazon. The owners are veteran travellers and their experience shows.

Baybay Beach
About 3km north of downtown Roxas is this 7km gray-sand beach lined with eateries and picnic shelters. It varies greatly in width depending on the location and tide. Watch fishermen unloading their catch at dawn and again at dusk.

Mt Luho View Deck
Looming high above the east coast, this viewpoint has stunning views across the island, though the steps up were designed for giants. The lush cross-country road linking it with the main road is quite a contrast to the coast.

Santa Monica Church & Bell
This 1572 church in the town of Panay, a 20-minute jeepney or tricycle(P100)ride from Roxas, has the distinction of housing the largest bell in Asia. It’s made entirely of coins from the Spanish period, and is more than 2m tall.

Chocolate Hills Viewpoint
From the base of the viewpoint, motorcycles can whisk you up the hill (P40 one way for two passengers), where the views are compromised by kiosks selling kitschy souvenirs. Of course, you can also walk up the hill (20 to 30 minutes).

Bandila
Bandila-an Mountain View Park is essentially a public garden, with lots of flowers, walking paths and little pavilions for picnics. Its great for bird- and butterfly-watching. Its 3km east of Cantabon, and is also accessible from Lazi.

The Mind Museum
This world-class science museum succeeds in balancing education with fun, with plenty of cool interactive exhibits, including a planetarium, life-size T Rex, remote control robots, fossil digs, hourly science experiments and 1980s arcade games.

Avilon Zoo
A humane zoo, if you have wheels, is the Avilon Zoo . It’s northeast of Quezon City in the town of Rodriguez, a 40- to 60-minute drive from Makati (depending on traffic). It’s damn near impossible to find so get directions on its website.

Stations of the Cross
Just before Bonbon you’ll pass the Old Camiguin Volcano, whose slopes have been turned into a steep and beautiful Stations of the Cross. There are great views from the top and a few souvenir stalls clustered at the bottom of the steps.

Palawan Museum
Housed in the old City Hall building adjacent to Mendoza Park, this museum has two floors of ageing exhibits about the ethnological and archaeological significance of Palawan, most with interesting accompanying explanations in English.

Tomalistis Falls
On the east coast, and reputed to have exceptionally sweet water, the Tomalistis Falls pour from a cliff face and are accessible only at low tide (or otherwise by boat) – though the flow has lessened as villagers divert the water for domestic use.

Museo It Akean
This little downtown museum, in a nicely restored school building between the market and Pastrana Park, offers a rare look at Aklan history, culture and traditions. It is worth the visit as it only takes 30 minutes and there is nothing else like it.

Museo Iloilo
Offers a worthwhile display on the indigenous Ati (Negrito) people and a collection of old pinya (pineapple fibre) weavings, for which the area is famous. It also has treasure plucked from sunken ships, and jewellery unearthed from Spanish burial sites.

Long Beach
One of the longest undeveloped beaches in the country is the 14km white-sand Long Beach on the mainland near San Vicente. Rumors that an airport with international connections and Boracay-like hotels are imminent have lingered for nearly a decade.

Culion Museum & Archives
This museum has a half-hour film and several large rooms filled with photos and artefacts tell the poignant and little-known story of the leper colony that was opened here in 1906, once one of the largest in the world. Located on the hospital grounds.
