On the grounds of the archeological site for King Muryeongs tomb, this museum has models of the tombs that you can enter, as well as English information about the tombs and the history of the Baekje kingdom.

Gyeongju Folk Handicraft Village
This village of 45 traditional Korean tiled- and thatched-roof houses near Toham-san and Bulguk-sa is home to metal, ceramic, wood and other artisans and their workshops, which you can visit with a free tour.

Mangdeok
A vast Shilla-era temple complex spread across an open field. The origin and reason for the complex is filled with legend and rumour. One tale claims that the pagoda once swayed to warn of a coming rebellion.

Mallipo Beach
Though Mallipo is seeing more and more development every year, its still a fine stretch of sand, a gentle crescent bookended by piney headlands. Its a 15-minute walk from here to the quieter Cheollipo Beach.

Hyehwamun
One of the four subgates of Seoul City Wall, Hyehwamun is also known as Dongsomun, meaning small east gate. Originally built in 1396, it was reconstructed n 1992 in this spot above the main road where it used to stand.

Hakgojae
This elegant gallery is easily spotted by the robot sculpture on the roof of its modern section. Entry is via the converted hanok building which neatly symbolises the gallerys aim of to review the old to learn the new.

Sajikdan
This impressive stone altar in a tranquil park surrounded by low stone walls and ornate wooden gates dates back to 1395 and King Taejo, founder of the Joseon dynasty. It was used to pray to the gods for good harvests.

Culture Station Seoul 284
This grand 1925 building with a domed roof has been beautifully restored inside and out and made into a cultural-arts space staging a variety of events. The number 284 refers to the station’s historic site number.

Mokpo Natural History Museum

Running a program to support art education and activities for the blind, Another Way of Seeing is a gallery where the thought-provoking exhibitions frequently play on senses other than sight, such as smell, touch and sound.

Jeongnimsaji
This is the site of the Baekje-era temple, Jeongnimsa. All that remains is a 8.3m five-storey stone pagoda – though this alone is certainly impressive. Theres also a museum on Baekje culture but its all in Korean.

Udo Lighthouse Park
A short drive from Cheonjin Port, expect grassy hills overlooking rugged rock formations, steep steps up to the lighthouse, spectacular views of rural Udo from Udo-bong (Udo Peak) and an endless parade of travellers taking selfies.

Anglican Church
An imposing Renaissance-style church built in the shape of a cross with Korean-style tiles on the roof – it’s a fine example of architectural fusion. Work on the church began in 1922 but the full design was not completed until 1996.

SeMa Nam Seoul Living Arts Museum
Housed within a beautiful colonial building (c 1901) that was the former Belgian consulate, this branch of SEMA labels itself as a living arts museum with changing exhibits that range from furniture to design and art installations.

Samcheong Park
Meaning three blue trees Samcheong Park on the slopes of Bukaksan is planted with many cherry trees so is a popular viewing spot for blossoms in spring. Hiking trails here connect up with those that follow Seoul City Wall.

Tteok & Kitchen Utensil Museum
For those interested in the local sweet culture, this two-room museum at the Institute of Traditional Korean Food offers displays of rice cakes in different colours, flavourings, shapes and sizes, plus the utensils to make them.

Jungang Live Fish Market
Sure theres lots of fish, but this open-air market, filled with grannies selling food out of plastic tubs, is a good place to buy fruit and vegies before heading out on a ferry trip. The front entrance is near Gangguan harbour.

Cheonan Warship Memorial
This sombre memorial is dedicated to the 46 crewmen from the Cheonan warship who lost their lives in 2010 after being hit by a torpedo allegedly fired by a North Korean vessel. The incident occurred 2.5km out to sea from this site.

Arko Art Center
Interesting, often avant-garde, art is assembled in three large galleries, run by the Arts Council Korea. The big red-brick complex (designed by Kim Swoo Geun, one of Korea’s most famous postwar architects) overlooks Marronnier Park.

Yongdu
Close to the shopping in Nampo-dong, this humble park is home to the 118m-high Busan Tower . If the haze is not too thick, daytime views of container-ship traffic in the harbour provide a sense of the port’s scale of operations.
