This park may be the smallest of the national parks in Gangwon-do, but it offers challenging hikes and is a very doable weekend trip from Seoul.

History Centre Museum
A walking-tour map is available from Donggureung History Centre Museum inside the gates entrance, which also has a good overview of the area.

Mystery of Caves Exhibition
This museum has explanations (some in English) in elaborate detail on cave formation. There is also a 20-minute IMAX film at 10.30am, 2pm and 3pm.

Museum of Korea Straw & Plants Handicrafts
Masks, human figures, torches, bird catchers, bags, mats, cradles, chicken nests, rope, egg holders, and human and cattle shoes – all made of straw.

Seonam Gangu
After following the steep steps leading from Paldalmun, veer off to the left up to the Seonam Gangu, an observation point near the peak of Paldal-san.

Sinyang Beach
This crescent-shaped 1.5km beach is sheltered and is great for windsurfing; in summer you can rent sailboats and windsurfers and take lessons in both.

Yeongyeongdang
Inside the Huwon (Secret Garden) section of Changdeokgung this pavilion was originally built in 1828 as a place for the Crown Prince to study.

Ssangsu
This pavilion inside the Gongsan-seong is named for a pair of trees that King Injo used to lean against, whilst contemplating the fate of his kingdom.

Eulwangni Beach
One of Yeongjongdo’s most popular western beaches is Eulwangni with an attractive location framed by hillside pine forests. It gets busy on weekends.

Daejeon
This small, noble temple built in 672 AD greets visitors just inside the entrance to the Juwangsan National Park, making it feel like a splendid gate.

Seoul Science Park is a fascinating rabbit warren of a children’s science museum, with hands-on, discover-for-yourself exhibits and special exhibitions.

Soyang
This 7m-tall bronze statue by the lake is more exciting if you know the famous Korean song mentioning her – dont worry, the ballad whines on loop by the water.

Pottery gallery and shop within Icheon Ceramic Village where you can find the classy celadon-glazed wares of a master potter, and view a traditional-style kiln.

Songdo’s most futuristic piece of architecture, the photogenic Tri-bowl is part giant sculpture, part exhibition hall with regular concert performances.

Olympic Stadium
The main stadium built for Seouls 1988 Olympics is now used for major concerts – hosting the likes of Pink to Paul McCartney, as well as K-League soccer games.

During the Christmas season, the streets are aglow and the area around the statute might be the most beautiful place in the city for an evening stroll.

A noodle museum with engaging visual displays about the famous Chinese dish of jjajangmyeon, invented as a cheap eat for local workers at Incheons port town.

Gwandeok
Outside the main gate of Jeju Mokgwana is the 15th-century pavilion Gwandeok-jeong, Jeju’s oldest building, once used as a training place for soldiers.

Donggun
These were the living quarters for the Crown Prince at Gyeongbokgung, Seouls main palace. To the rear, King Gojong built more halls for his own personal use.
