Jaffna is slowly rebuilding and repairing the damage left from the war. But east of the fort was Jaffna’s former government district, and some ruined structures, like the former kachcheri (administrative office), remain, pockmarked by bullets and shrapnel, moss-encrusted and slowly folding in on themselves.
The fishing community between Beach Rd and the lagoon also suffered immensely in the fighting. It was a restricted area for years, and many fishermen had to pass through checkposts just to walk the few blocks to the water. Today the waterfront is scarred with damage from the war, but the neighbourhood is friendly, if unaccustomed to visitors.
