Once a busy processing plant and a source of local employment, the factory closed its doors in the 1990s. Local artisans and craftspeople soon began to reopen the abandoned warehouse space as makeshift studios: a genuine local art scene developed and continues to gain in reputation.
As you ride into Dulan from the north, it's easy to spot the factory on the right, near the edge of town. Weekdays the art scene is usually pretty quiet, but weekends you can usually watch carvers at work and also make purchases of some unique articles. The factory is also the setting for frequent east coast festivals and weekly live music concerts by aboriginal players on Saturday night.
