This cultural and religious complex has a colossal 29m statue of its namesake goddess atop the hill to the northeast of Matsu Temple .

The Huchingtou War Museum contains war memorabilia and an observation room with binoculars from which you can see Xiamen on a clear day.

Green Island Lighthouse
The 33m-high Green Island Lighthouse was built in 1937 under the Japanese after the American ship President Hoover struck a reef and sank.

National Museum of Marine Biology
The museum is rated highly by visitors for the live displays of incredibly diverse marine life that are professionally and imaginatively designed.

Back Cihu
This former command centre was used by Chiang in his plans to retake China. Its set around a pretty lake and takes a couple of hours to walk.

White Horse God Temple
The small White Horse God Temple is devoted to a deified general who once defended Fujian. During storms a mysterious light appears to guide ships.

Guoyeh Prismatic Basalt
Just down the road towards the coast is the Guoyeh Prismatic Basalt, a beautiful example of the basalt cliffs formed from the cooling lava that created Penghu.

Shihkung Ancestral Shrine
Behind Matsu Temple are a series of winding brick-paved pedestrian lanes that are home to a number of interesting sights such as the Shihkung Ancestral Shrine.

Kaohsiung Film Archives
Just back from the Love River is the wonderful Municipal Film Archives, where you can enjoy on-site private and public viewings of the archives films.

Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts
Has a stylish interior with exhibits highlighting Taiwanese artists and local themes. Exhibits change frequently. Take Bus 35 from KMRT Aozihdi station.

Qionglin Village (Cyonglin or Chiunglin)
Qionglin Village in Kinhu is famous for having more shrines than any other village on Kinmen. Head off the main road for the best atmosphere and buildings.

Warriors’ Fort & Iron Men’s Fort
The two intact forts in Huangtso were built in the 1970s and each has a web of underground tunnels, including a 200m-long one that connect the two structures.

Beitou Library
Opened in 2006, this beautiful wooden building was Taiwans first green construction project. You can go inside and wander about or just hang out on the decks.

Yangming Shuwu
The last and largest retreat built for Chiang Kai-shek. Entrance is on a Chinese language tour only at 9am and 1.30pm. Ask at the visitor centre for directions.

Formosa Boulevard KMRT Station
Stop to see the resplendent Dome of Light (光之穹頂, Guāng Zhī Qióng Dǐng), by Italian glass artist Narcissus Quagliata. Formosa Blvd is south of the main train station.

Beiguan Tidal Park
Just north of Waiao is this small seaside park with beautiful cuesta and tofu block rock formations, and lookouts down the coast. You can snorkel here in summer.

Bashianshan Forest Recreation Area
This forest reserve offers a range of trails for light hiking (from two to six hours). The reserve is also a prime site for spotting endemic bird and butterfly species.

Yuwongdao Lighthouse
In the 19th century, British lighthouse keepers stayed here on 10-year shifts. Look for the stone cross marking the grave of Nellie ODriscol, the daughter of one of the keepers.
