This ruined temple's three magnificent stupas are one of the iconic images of Ayuthaya. Built in the late 15th century, Wat Phra Si Sanphet was a royal temple inside palace grounds, and these were the models for Bangkok's Wat Phra Kaew and Royal Palace. It was Ayuthaya's largest temple and once contained a 16m-high standing Buddha (Phra Si Sanphet) covered with 143kg (or more, depending on the source) of gold, which was melted down by Burmese conquerors.
