Poking out of the forest above town, this temple is the spiritual centre of Thailand's Mon people. The wí·hǎhn with three green and yellow towers is a shrine to the highly respected monk Luang Phaw Uttama who died in 2006 and whose body lies inside. Born in Myanmar, he fled to Thailand in 1949 to escape the civil war and became a cornerstone of the Mon community in both countries, as well as a noted Buddhist leader across Thailand.
