Wichairacha House
This beautiful teak mansion is thought to have been built in 1898 by Cantonese artisans. Efforts are being made to turn the house into a museum, though at the time of research the work was far from complete.

Ko Tachai
In 1998, the park was expanded from its original nine islands to include Ko Bon and Ko Tachai. Both remained largely unscathed by coral bleaching making them some of the better diving and snorkelling areas.

Hat Kai Mook
The name means pearl beach, although the pearls here are really just large pebbles that pack the shore and culminate in fish-friendly headlands. Swimming and sunbathing are out but there’s good snorkelling.

Namdhari Sikh Temple
Chinatown is also home to a small population of Sikh migrants from Burma who specialise in selling bolts of fabric. They worship at the nearby Namdhari Sikh Temple, catering to the Namdhari sect of Sikhism.

Chinese Martyr’s Memorial Museum
South of the turn-off to the KMT general’s tomb is the Chinese Martyr’s Memorial Museum, an elaborate Chinese-style building that houses displays on the KMT experience – battles, migration, culture – in Thailand.

Ancient Cloth Museum
The Ancient Cloth Museum contains a beautiful – and informative – assemblage of traditional silks and cottons from across the Tai-speaking world, although at the time of research it was closed for renovations.

Wat Si Ubon Rattanaram Museum
The temple has turned a beautiful old wooden săh·lah into a museum of religious items. The highlight is the collection of 18th-century đoô prá đraiЪìdòk , gorgeous boxes used for storing sacred palm-leaf texts.

Wat Si Sawai
Just south of Wat Mahathat, this Buddhist shrine (dating from the 12th and 13th centuries) features three Khmer-style towers and a picturesque moat. It was originally built by the Khmers as a Hindu temple.

Nan Riverside Gallery
Twenty kilometres north of Nan on Rte 1080, this private art gallery exhibits contemporary Nan-influenced art in a peaceful setting. From Nan, take any northbound bus or sŏrng·tăa·ou to the gallery (30B).

Nakhon Phanom Freshwater Aquarium
The Nakhon Phanom Freshwater Aquarium houses Mekong River species, including giant Mekong catfish ( Ъlah bèuk ). It’s 5km west of town and 1km south of Hwy 22. Sŏrng·tăa·ou to Nakae (20B, 15 minutes) pass by.

Ao Pileh
Of the two gorgeous emerald lagoons that await in Phi-Phi Lehs interior, Pileh lies on the eastern coast. Its predictably busy, but the thrill of kayaking between these towering limestone walls never gets old.

Lagenda Langkawi Dalam Taman
A landscaped ‘folklore theme park’ that stretches along the waterfront. Bright statues dotted amid the lakes illustrate several Langkawi legends, with signboards in English. It’s a popular spot for joggers.

Ko Panyi
A stilted Muslim village clings to this small karst island, where most tours dock for lunch. Its busy, but several Phang-Nga town tours enable you to stay overnight and soak up the scenery without crowds.

Pha Soet Hot Spring
The hot water from this natural spring has been redirected into a communal pool; for a more private experience, rooms are also available (from 50B to 100B). Ban Pha Soet is located about 3km west of Ban Ruam Mit.

Museum of Counterfeit Goods
Fakes are so prominent in Bangkok that there’s even a Museum of Counterfeit Goods, where all the counterfeit booty that has been collected by the law firm Tilleke and Gibbins over the years is on display.

Galare Lake
The area around Chiang Mai University has loads of green space. For city views head to Galare Lake ; it isn’t much of a workout but the students like this spot because no one seems to mind an open container.

Wat Nam Hoo
Wat Nam Hoo is about 2km west of Pai and houses a sacred Buddha image said to have once emitted holy water from its head. The place is popular with visiting Thais and there’s a small market on the grounds.

Ko Phetra Marine National Park
Ko Phetra Marine National Park is a stunning archipelago that includes Ko Khao Yai, Ko Lao Liang, Ko Bulon Leh (the park’s only island with privately run accommodation; see p720) and 19 other furry green isles.

Sukhothai Ruins
The Sukhothai ruins are one of Thailand’s most impressive World Heritage Sites. The park includes remains of 21 historical sites and four large ponds within the old walls, with an additional 70 sites within a 5km radius.
