For temple enthusiasts, Wat Laem Saw, at the southern end of Samui near Ban Phang Ka, is home to an interesting, highly venerated old Srivijaya-style stupa.

This old temple has a soaring bóht and chedi . The latter, built in 1789, is surrounded by a cloister featuring many Buddha images and you can go inside.

Phu Phan Museum
Though displays are only signed in Thai, this well-done museum still warrants a visit. Displays cover dinosaurs, Buddhism and Sakon Nakhons six tribes.

Udon Thani Provincial Museum
Filling a 1920s colonial-style building that used to be a girls school, this museum has an interesting catch-all collection ranging from geology to handicrafts.

Wat Phothisomphon
The centrepiece of this historic temple, built during the reign of King Rama V, is a modern chedi, built to honour several revered monks. The murals inside are excellent.

Wat Saphan Kham
Beautiful in its simplicity, the small, recently restored bòht here is estimated to be about a century old and is fronted by two unintentionally adorable naga .

Close to the small town of Ao Luk, about 46km northwest of Krabi, Tharnbok Korannee National Park protects a large area of islands, mangroves and limestone caves.

Wat Keophone Savanthanaram
Wat Keophone Savanthanaram features murals of gruesome torture scenes on the sǐm s north wall while on the slope above, a long Buddha reclines behind chicken wire.

Ko Rok Nok
Ko Rok Nok has fine coral reefs and you can camp here with permission from the national park headquarters. The island is off-limits to visitors from 16 May to 31 October.

Na Muang 2
The smaller of two waterfalls just north of the ring road near Ban Hua Thanon. There are signs warning visitors not to climb the falls as there have been fatalities.

Surins gorgeous city pillar shrine, just west of Th Tanasarn, is a Khmer-style prang with copies of Phanom Rungs famous Narai Bandhomsindhu lintel above the doors.

This gallery, located inside Thailand’s most prestigious arts school, showcases faculty and student exhibitions. There’s also an accompanying courtyard cafe and art shop.

Meunram Shrine
Hazy with incense smoke, the Chinese Meunram Shrine conceals a surprisingly elaborate interior behind a blander facade and sometimes sponsors southern Thai shadow theatre.
