Eight Mile Rock
Eight Mile Rock is a deep pinnacle that attracts devil rays and the (very) rare whale shark. Its the only site in the area to see pelagics.

The freshwater aquarium at the Sakon Nakhon Fishery Station displays fish from Nong Han, as well as the Mekong and Songkhram rivers.

Its the resident monkeys rather than anything religious or artistic that makes this forest temple on the edge of town worth a visit.

A handsome wooden complex dotted with terracotta sculptures, this is one of the most attractive monasteries outside the city walls.

A small but popular shrine commemorating two white elephants that passed through here on their way to being offered to the king in Bangkok.

Wat Chomphu
Just north of Th Tha Phae, this calm monastery has a gorgeous gilded stupa with gold elephants, restored as a tribute to the king in 1999.

Sapan Kom
Across the park from the city monument, the replica Sapan Kom lies along part of a Khmer road leading to Wat Phra That Narai Cheng Weng.

Chado Cliff
There are great views from Chado Cliff above the main beach; apparently pirates plotted attacks on commercial ships from this viewpoint.

Wat Phayam
Shrouded in jungle just north of the main pier, on Ko Phayams east coast, youll find a majestic golden Buddha flanked by a three-headed naga .

Wat Burapa Pa
This gorgeous museum in Wat Burapa Pa-Ao Nuea holds various historical artefacts and local handicrafts; unfortunately, there are very few labels.

Surin Agriculture Service Centre
This is a sericulture research centre 4km west of town. It is the easiest place around to see the entire silk-making process, from larva to loom.

Other Temples
Other notable temples include Wat Kam Kor , known for its unique covered walkway, and Wat Phra Non home to the largest reclining Buddha in town.

An all-day market forms at the southern end of town and unites vendors selling hill-tribe handicrafts, shops selling tea and a few basic restaurants.

Wat Tha Khok
Wat Tha Khok has a bit of history, going back 22 years. It contains an elaborate but slightly ugly bóht and is a popular temple for local functions.

Wat Yod Kaeo Sivichai
This temple stands out for having an enormous Buddha inside a glass-walled wí·hăhn, and not one, but two small chedi modelled on Phra That Phanom.

Wat Li
Just off Rte 1 opposite the turn-off to Phayao, this Buddhist temple features a small museum with a decent variety of items from the Chiang Saen era.

Thai Boat Museum
This interesting little private museum is full of wooden boats, both real and artistic miniatures, many of which still ply Ayuthaya’s rivers today.

Wat Chi Prasoet
Somewhat unusually for a Thai temple, contemporary stucco work portraying the violent political unrest of 1973 can be viewed at Wat Chi Prasoet .

Prince Prajak Monument
Udon Thani was founded by Prince Prajak and his name decorates many a street and public building, not only in Udon but in many northern Isan cities.
