Rockpile
Visible from Hwy 9, this 230m-high karst outcrop once had a US Marine Corps lookout on top and a base for American long-range artillery nearby. The Rockpile is 29km west of Dong Ha on Hwy 9.

Ong Lan Beach
Ong Lan Beach has a series of sandy bays sheltered by rocky headlands. Several midrange resorts in this area service those wanting to get away from everything (apart from the comfort of said resorts).

Khem Beach
Undeveloped Khem Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, but is also one of the few remaining areas thats under military control. Consequently, its generally closed to the public.

Hoi An Museum of History & Culture
Housed in the Quan Am Pagoda, this museum provides a sampling of pre-Cham, Cham and port-era artefacts, with some huge bells, historic photos, old scales and weights alongside plenty of ceramics.

Thanh Ha Terracotta Park
This new museum presents an overview of the history of terracotta in different countries and cultures around the world. Often there are local craftspeople in residence in the museums workshop.

Cat Co 1
Cat Co 1 has a decent stretch of beach but is dominated by a rather ugly resort. Dont expect much peace and quiet here during the summer months as this is the most popular spot of sand in the area.

Sin Cheng Market
This market, in the remote border area of Si Ma Cai, 40km from Bac Ha, is a vibrant and chaotic weekly hub for the local Nung and Thulao ethnic minorities who live in the surrounding villages.

Tomb of Thieu Tri
The only royal tomb not enclosed by a wall, the monument of Thieu Tri (built 1848) has a similar floor plan to his father Minh Mang’s tomb, but is substantially smaller. The tomb is about 7km from Hue.

Phac Hat Pagoda
Phac Hat Pagoda has a colourful facade of ceramics and murals and an elaborate roof with snake-like dragons. There’s a huge central courtyard containing hundreds of potted plants and bonsai trees.

Camp Carroll
Camp Carrolls colossal cannons used to shell targets as far away as Khe Sanh. All that remains now is a Vietnamese memorial. The turn-off to Camp Carroll is 10km west of Cam Lo; it’s 3km from Hwy 9.

Lang Son Market
Lang Son’s market area sprawls over about three blocks, just off P Tran Dang Ninh. Its a colourful and hectic place stuffed to the brim with hawkers and stalls selling produce, and plentiful food stalls.

Hang Sung Sot
The popular Hang Sung Sot has three vast chambers; in the second there’s a pink-lit rock phallus unsurprisingly regarded as a fertility symbol. Even less surprisingly, some guides refer to it as the ‘Cock Rock’.

Hang Trong
Hang Trong has wide-arched entrances on either side and a ceiling clustered with stalactites. Its named because when the wind blows through its stalactites, the effect resembles the sound of distant drumbeats.

Cat Co 3
Cat Co 3 is the closest beach to Cat Ba Town but its blink-and-you-miss-it sliver of sand isnt really worth stopping for. Head here just to take the brilliantly scenic cliff-side walking trail to Cat Ba 1 and 2.

Galerie Quynh
This is one of the best-known galleries in the city – probably the place for Vietnamese contemporary art. Don’t turn around thinking you have missed this place, as it is located in a very backstreet part of town.

Coc Ly Market
The impressive Coc Ly market attracts Dzao, Flower Hmong, Tay and Nung people from the surrounding hills. It’s about 35km southwest of Bac Ha along reasonably good roads. Tour operators in Bac Ha can arrange day trips here.

Cathedral
The Tay Ninh of the north, Phat Diem is the home of a celebrated cathedral , which is remarkable for its vast dimensions and inimitable Sino-Vietnamese architecture, with a dash of European dressing for good measure.

Leper Hospital Grounds
The hospital grounds are so well maintained that it looks a bit like a resort, complete with a guitar-shaped pavilion and numerous busts of distinguished and historically important doctors, both Vietnamese and foreign.

Tam Toa Church
The Nhat Le River, which divides the city of Dong Hoi from a beautiful sandy spit, boasts a landscaped riverside promenade that includes the haunting, ruined facade of the Tam Toa Church, which was bombed in 1965.

Queen of the Rosary Cathedral
Haiphong’s elegant Roman Catholic cathedral was built in the 19th century and comprehensively restored in 2010. The building’s grey towers are a local landmark, although the actual interior of the church is rather plain.
