Cuba's sugar industry is in the process of being preserved at this huge rusting ex-sugar mill in the village of Patria 3km south of Morón. First opened in 1914, the mill and its 263-strong workforce were passed over to the Americans in 1919, and it remained in Yanqui hands until it was nationalized in 1960. A 1920 Baldwin steam train made in Philadelphia takes pre-booked tour groups on a 5km jaunt through the cane fields to Rancho Palma , a bucolic finca (farmhouse) with a bar-restaurant and country airs where you can sample guarapo (pressed cane juice). Independent visitors can ask for a tour here, but to get the full train treatment you'll need to tag onto a group. Check schedules with Cubatur in Morón.
