Lovers come to watch the sunset amid sea-framed greenery at the gazebo on the extreme southern tip of this park. The bar is also oddly popular with local police officers.

Balcón de Velázquez
The alfresco Balcón de Velázquez is the site of an old Spanish fort which offers ethereal views over the terracotta-tiled roofs of the Tivolí neighborhood toward the harbor.

Statue of Benny Moré
Before you hit the Malecón, at the intersection of Av 54 and the Paseo del Prado you can pay your respects to this life-size likeness of the musician with his trademark cane.

La Plaza
In the village, the area just above Hotel Moka encompasses a cinema, a library and an ecological museum. All are generally open throughout the day, or can become so if you ask.

Steam Locomotive 964
Railway enthusiasts shouldnt miss this old steamer built at the HK Porter Locomotive Works in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1888, now on display 400m east of the bus station.

Museo de Mártires
Effectively an arm of Guanabacoa’s municipal museum, this place is on the road to Regla and displays material relevant to the Cuban Revolution. Pop in only if you’re passing.

La Casona Centro de Arte
Housed in one of Plaza Viejas most striking buildings (note the sturdy colonial overtones), this gallery/shop has great solo and group shows by up-and-coming Cuban artists.

Fuerte de la Punta
This Spanish fort has watched over the harbor entrance at the northwestern end of town since 1803. The super-thick, hurricane-resistant walls now hide a rather pleasant restaurant .

Museo de Ciencias Naturales
Not much of a natural history museum, this colonial house just off Parque Serafín Sánchez has a stuffed crocodile (which will scare the wits out of your kids) and some shiny rock collections.

Parque Libertad
A few blocks directly west of Plaza de la Vigía is Parque Libertad with several more of Matanzas most stimulating sights, including a bronze statue (1909) of José Martí in the center.

Fábrica de Tabacos el Sucro
The cigar factory right in the center of town is a post-revolution addition to the local economy. Tours are normally group-only. Ask at the Havanatur office and you may be able to tag along.

Moncada Museum
The museum inside the Cuartel Moncada is the best in town and one of the best in Cuba. Sometimes gory exhibits catalogue the details of the 1953 attack by Fidel Castro on the barracks.

Fountain of Martí and Abel Santamaría
In the Parque Histórico Abel Santamaría theres a giant Cubist fountain engraved with the countenances of Abel Santamaría and José Martí that gushes out a veritable Niagara Falls of water.

El Oasis
Three kilometers east of the Playa Siboney road at the Club Bucanero turn-off is this small artistic community where a dozen painters have studios displaying and selling their works.

Museo Casa Natal de Serafín Sánchez
Serafín Sánchez was a local patriot who took part in both Wars of Independence and went down fighting in November 1896. The museum cataloguing his heroics will delay you for 20 minutes max.

Gobierno Provincial
Situated opposite the Bacardí Museum, the equally Hellenic provincial government seat is another building from Cubas 20th-century neoclassical revival. No public entry is permitted.

Casa Natal de Nicolás Guillén
This modest house gives visitors a small insight into Cubas late national poet and his books, and today doubles as the Instituto Superior de Arte, where local students come to study music.

Cámara Oscura
On the northeastern corner of Plaza Vieja is this clever optical device providing live, 360-degree views of the city from atop a 35m-tall tower. Explanations are in Spanish and English.

Ah
North of Alligator Alley (Hwy 75) Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Museum has a 1.5-mile, wheelchair-accessible nature trail that takes you through a 60-acre cypress dome to a re-created Seminole village.

Museo del Aire
Museo del Aire has 22 planes and helicopters on display, most of them ex-military aircraft. Don’t miss Che Guevara’s personal Cessna 310, or the space suit used by Cuba’s first cosmonaut.
