Santo Domingo
The capital city of the Dominican Republic, Santo Domingo provides a cosmopolitan experience for travelers to contrast with the island's otherwise relaxing beach vibes.
There is much political history to be found here, and Santo Domingo has a few different corresponding claims to fame. The city is considered what was the first European city in the New World, as it has been continuously inhabited by Europeans since 1496 after Spanish explorers landed on its shores. Santo Domingo's Colonial Zone is also a standout, with its preserved historical buildings, and the Gazcue neighborhood within it features stately Victorian-era houses and prominent government buildings alongside museums. On the palm tree-lined Washington Avenue, you’ll come across a variety of historic monuments.
Santo Domingo is also a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its history as the oldest European-settled town in the Americas. The Americas' first cathedral and university were built here, and the cathedral, known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor, still stands today in the Colonial Zone. The city's original grid pattern also served as inspiration for future colonies and towns in the Americas.
