Carriacou

At only 13 square miles in size, Carriacou provides a laid-back refuge from its larger neighboring island of Grenada. Part of the Grenadine islands chain, it is known as “the island surrounded by reefs," with its clear waters providing excellent access to the colorful Caribbean corals and marine life.
Snorkeling and scuba diving options abound here, including the White Island Marine Park and the Sandy Island Oyster Bed Marine Protected Area. Or visit one of the island’s many pristine beaches — there are both black and white sand beaches, and the aptly named Paradise Beach is a favorite.
Hillsborough is the main and only town here, where the island’s French, British and African influences can be seen. Frequent musical performances and dancing allow insight into the island culture, while a small Carriacou museum does the same by displaying history and artifacts. Major cultural festivals such as Carnival and the Maroon Festival are held here annually, but check the timing of your visit to catch them.

Carriacou is located 20 miles north of Grenada, from which ferry services are available (Monday through Saturday at 9 a.m. and Sunday at 8 a.m.) with a travel time of 1.5 hours. Traveling from Carriacou to Grenada, ferries depart daily at 3:30 p.m. Tickets cost EC $80 one way or EC $160 round-trip per person. Minibuses run on the island from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
