Falmouth Cruise Port

The town of Falmouth on the northern coast of Jamaica is one of the largest colonial historic districts in the Caribbean and is home to the Historic Falmouth Cruise Port, the newest cruise port to open on the island. Founded in 1769, Falmouth was one of Jamaica’s busiest ports during the 18th century. Today it’s the capital of Trelawny Parish and is one of the country’s best preserved Georgian towns.

How to get to Falmouth

Cruise ships dock right outside Falmouth and getting to the historic district is as easy as walking through the port complex and crossing the street. As you walk through the port take note of one of the most important historic buildings in Falmouth: the former home of plantation owner John Tharp, located inside the port complex. Lining the walkway that heads out of the cruise port are illustrated signs with old photos and historic information about the town.

One day in Falmouth

Once in Falmouth, you can tour the historic district independently or on a guided walking tour and soak in the rich heritage of the town. See more of the island a shore excursion to some of Jamaica’s top attractions, including Montego Bay which is just a short distance away. Also popular are visits to the Good Hope Great House; the village of Rio Bueno where you can enjoy tubing, rafting and kayaking along the Rio Bueno River; and Ocho Rios where you can visit the famous Dunn’s River Falls.

Port Information

Jamaica has its own currency, also called the dollar, but most places will gladly accept U.S. dollars and it’s unlikely that you’ll need to exchange money. Prices are generally quoted in U.S. dollars, but it’s still a good idea to inquire as to which currency is being quoted when making purchases, especially at some of the smaller local establishments. The official language on the island is English.
