At the west end of Main St stands the Columbus Monument, topped by a bronze figure of the explorer dolled up as a Spanish grandee.

St George’s Parish Church
This church, opposite the courthouse, was built in 1905. It’s uninspired, but has a stately pipe organ that was dedicated in 1914.

Ba Beta Kristian Church of Haile Selassie I
A Sunday afternoon service here is a colorful affair. To attend, women must sit on the right-hand side, wear dresses and keep their hair covered.

Marcus Garvey Statue
The grassy forecourt of the parish library on King St is dominated by the Marcus Garvey Statue, with the hero portrayed larger than life in gray bronze.

Columbus Foot
Immediately west of Island Village Beach is Columbus Foot, a tiny fishermens beach with colorful pirogues (fishing boats) and nets festooning shade trees.

Fishermen’s Beach
Immediately west of Island Village Beach is the tiny public Fishermen’s Beach, with colorful fishing boats and several eateries serving fresh fish and more.

Blue Mountain Peak
Highest of the highlights, Blue Mountain Peak reaches 2256m above sea level, and no visit to the area should neglect a predawn hike to its summit for a sunrise view.

Little Theatre
Puts on plays, folk concerts and modern dance throughout the year. The National Dance Theatre Company performs July to August. Pantomime from late December through April.

Manning’s School
At the north end of town by the roundabout known as Hendon Circle is the very handsome Manning’s School, built in 1738 and named after Westmoreland planter Thomas Manning.

Calabash Bay Beach
Heading east from Jack Spratt Beach, there’s Calabash Bay Beach, with a few beach shacks plying rum and – if youre lucky – some basic potluck cuisine (fish, mainly).

Jamaica Beach
Between Tower Isle and Rio Nuevo, it is renowned for its dive sites offshore. The offshore reef, known as the Rio Nuevo Wall, supports turtles, barracudas and other marine life.

Stony Gut Monument
The marker, commemorating Bogle’s birthplace, stands opposite the Methodist church, 8km inland at the tiny hamlet of Stony Gut. His great grandson Phillip Bogle is buried behind the marker.

Island Village Beach
Island Village Beach, located at the west end of Main St, is a peaceful, smaller beach with lockers, towels, beach chairs and umbrellas for hire. Also on offer is a complete range of water sports.

Turtle Beach
The main beach of Ocho Rios is the long crescent of Turtle Beach , stretching east from the Turtle Towers condominiums to the Renaissance Jamaica Grande Resort. There are changing rooms, and palms for shade.

St Peter’s Anglican Church
The oldest extant building in town is St Peter’s Anglican Church, built in 1785 and enlarged in 1842. It lies four blocks west along Duke St. The graveyard tombstones are spookily sun-bleached, like bones.
