French St Martin makes up the north side of the island, while the Dutch St Maarten occupies the south side. The island is accessible by cruise ship, but the majority of boats dock on the Dutch side of the island. Rental cars are available for hire at the airport, but be sure to check whether they can be driven on both the French and Dutch sides of the island before taking off.
