Butterfly Garden
Step into a butterfly wonderland when vacationing on the Caribbean island of St Thomas at Butterfly Garden. It is the only exhibit of its kind in St Thomas and it focuses on educating visitors about butterflies while providing a netted mesh-enclosed sanctuary where butterflies roam free.
When visiting Butterfly Garden, you'll be taken on a 25-minute educational tour of the premises during which you'll learn about the lives of butterflies and different species. Afterward you're free to walk around more and observe the butterflies. Butterfly species you'll typically see include the Forest Giant Owl, the Yellow-Edged Giant Owl and the African Moon Moth. Enjoy watching them fly around the koi ponds and lush vegetation in the enclosure.
Outside the butterfly enclosure, but still on the premises, you may encounter another beautiful creature in flight, the hummingbird, thanks to plants and trees planted that attract the fast-winged birds.
The lifespan of butterflies is very short so keep in mind that the number of butterflies that can be seen can vary by day depending how many are undergoing their metamorphoses from caterpillar to butterfly the night before. Regardless, there will always be at least a couple different species of butterflies in numerous quantities flapping around your head when you visit.
Practical Info
Butterfly Garden is located in Havensight Mall in the town of Charlotte Amalie. It is open most days (depending on if a cruise ship is docked in Havensight) and operates from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during the months of November through April. Hours from May through October may vary. There is also an onsite store where you can get butterfly souvenirs. Unless you're a photographer looking for that perfect shot, head to Butterfly Garden in the morning when the winged insects are at their most active and will be flying all around you -- and maybe even land on you.
