Iseum

TIME : 2016/2/18 16:07:14

Once part of a grand 2nd-century complex of two temples dedicated to the Egyptian goddess Isis by Roman legionnaires (one of only three in Europe), Iseum was completely restored in 2011. The adjacent U-shaped hall makes a grand new home for the archaeological discoveries made at the vast Roman cemeteries at Alsópáhok and Nemesbőd, in the Szombathely region, dating back to the 1st century AD. The excellent 'Travelling to the Afterlife' exhibit currently features just a fraction of the graves still to be excavated and consists of complete skeletons, alongside the items buried with them, such as jewellery, weapons, tools and pottery, the objects and the analysis of the bones used to divine the individuals’ life stories – a must for anyone with an interest in Roman history.
