Not far from the Torturm is the house where Hitler was born in 1889; he only spent two years of his life here before moving with his family to Linz. The inscription outside simply reads Für Frieden, Freiheit und Demokratie, nie wieder Faschismus, Millionen Tote mahnen (For peace, freedom and democracy, never again fascism, millions of dead admonish).
The future of this ill-fated building is still up in the air. In 2012 the Russian MP Franz Klinzewitsch wanted to buy the house and raze it to the ground, which would chime with the sentiments of many locals. Unsurprisingly, its dark past is off-putting for potential buyers, and the word is that it could become an immigrant integration centre, which would be a remarkable volte-face.
