A hospital superintendent by the name of Lajos Smidt was a hoarder by nature and visiting this museum gives us the opportunity to do what most of us secretly enjoy: rooting through someone’s private belongings. His extraordinary collection includes antique Bibles, ornate 19th-century pistols, Iron Age swords, Roman remains, clocks, surgical equipment, Biedermeier miniatures and so much more. During your perambulations through this mansion, you may spot two legionaries’ skulls, Széchenyi’s wife’s dancing slippers, dinosaur molars, an opium pipe, Franz Liszt’s pocket watch and a tiny chess set for dolls.
