Schwaz’ other big draw is its well-preserved Altstadt. Taking pride of place on pedestrianised Franz-Josef-Strasse, the Gothic Pfarrkirche immediately catches your eye with its step-gabled roof bearing 14,000 copper tiles. The web-vaulted interior purportedly harbours the largest symphonic organ in Tyrol, which is put to use at 8.15pm every Monday.
Not far south is the Gothic-meets-baroque Franziskanerkirche ; Gothic windows and unfinished frescoes line its inner courtyard.
