Formerly known as Universitätsplatz (University Square), this was once the heart of Vienna’s old university quarter. Today, the Austrian Academy of the Sciences is located inside the Alte-Uni (Old Uni) building. An early university was built here in the 1420s, but the current building has all the hallmarks of the new late-baroque building erected here in the mid-18th century, especially the decorative Festsaal (Festive Hall).
