Hauptbücherei Wien
Vienna’s central city library straddles the U6 line, its pyramid-like steps leading up to the enormous main doors, which are two storeys tall. At the top of the library is the Café Oben , which has far-reaching views to the south.

Burg Forchtenstein
Straddling a dolomite spur some 20km southwest of Eisenstadt, Burg Forchtenstein is one of Burgenland’s imposing castles. This stronghold was built in the 14th century and enlarged by the Esterházys (who still own it today) in 1635.

Cistercian Monastery
In the eastern fringes of the Mostviertel, and only 23km south of St Pölten, is the Cistercian monastery of Lilienfeld. Founded in 1202, the foundations of the monastery are Romanesque, but have received Gothic and baroque make-overs.

Martinsturm
Not far past Martinstor is this baroque tower, topped by the largest onion dome in Central Europe. It’s worth seeing the14th-century frescoes in the chapel before climbing up to the small military museum for fine views over Bregenz’ rooftops.

Oberstadt
Slung high above the lake is the Oberstadt, Bregenz’ tiny old town of winding streets, candy-coloured houses and flowery gardens. It’s still enclosed by defensive walls and the sturdy Martinstor , guarded by a grotesque mummified shark.

Grottenbahn
At the summit of Pöstlingberg is the turn-of-the-century Grottenbahn , where families – and anyone that loves a bit of cult kitsch – can board the dragon train to trundle past gnomes, glittering stalactites and scenes from Grimms’ fairytales.

Music House
The apartment where Haydn lived, off and on, from 1761 to 1790 in the west wing of the baroque Music House, southwest of the palace, now contains the Joseph Haydn Memorial Hall on the 1st floor, a veritable temple to the great composer.

Dom St Jakob
Innsbrucks 18th-century cathedral is a feast of over-the-top baroque. The Asam brothers from Munich completed much of the sumptuous art and stucco work, though the Madonna above the high altar is by the German painter Lukas Cranach the Elder.

Stift Herzogenburg
The baroque Augustinian abbey Stift Herzogenburg is a highlight. Admission is on a guided tour (in English, arrange in advance), which includes the Stiftskirche and a late Gothic collection of paintings by the Danube School of artists.

Ötzi Dorf
This small open-air museum brings to life the Neolithic world of Ötzi the ice man. A visit takes in traditional thatched huts, herb gardens, craft displays and enclosures where wild boar and oxen roam. Multilingual audio guides are available.

Alter Dom
The twin towers of this late 17th-century cathedral dominate Linz’ skyline. With its stucco-work, its pink-marble altar and its gilt pillars, the interior is remarkably ornate. Famous local lad Anton Bruckner served as organist here from 1856 to 1868.

Zammer Lochputz
A roller coaster of water thrashes the limestone cliffs at Zammer Lochputz gorge just outside of Landeck. Leading up through pine forest, a trail passes viewpoints and some interesting rock formations – look out for the head of a bull and a nymph.

Wildpark
Facing the castle across the town is Ardetzenberg (631m), a heavily forested hill. At its northern end is this wildlife park, with a woodland trail, adventure playground, barbecue areas, and animal-friendly enclosures home to marmots, ibex and wild boar.

Stiftskirche
What can be seen without greasing the palms of the abbey with silver are the Stiftskirche . The marvellously over-the-top baroque church is crisscrossed with white stuccowork, draped in Flemish tapestries and festooned with dark, brooding paintings.

Kalke Village
Kalke Village is the handiwork of Hundertwasser, created from an old Michelin factory. It contains overpriced cafes, souvenir shops and art shops, all in typical Hundertwasser fashion with colourful ceramics and a distinct absence of straight lines.

Boundless Story
Local history exhibition on the 1st floor of Storno House, including curiosities from the old town hall, works by István Dorfmeister and a piano once played by Franc Liszt. A combined ticket with the Firewatch Tower and the Storno Collection costs 2500/1250Ft.

Church of the Sacred Heart
The interior of this pointy neo-Gothic stunner, built in 1894, is the most beautiful for many miles around: a vivid blue that really sets off the geometric frescoes and the images of the saints on the stained glass windows – particularly striking on a sunny day.

Stift Altenburg
From Schloss Rosenburg, follow the L53 and B38 5km to the Benedictine Stift Altenburg , which can trace its foundations back to 1144. The abbey library (which has ceiling frescos by Paul Troger) and the crypt (with frescos by Troger’s pupils) are highlights.

St Barbara Kirche
Although built after WWII, St Barbara Kirche needed renovating in the late 1980s. About 80% of the town population voted to commission the maverick Viennese artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser to undertake the redesign; work began in 1987 and was completed in 1988.

Domgrabungsmuseum
Map out the city’s past with a romp of the rocks at this subterranean archaeology museum beside the Dom. Particularly of interest are fragments of Roman mosaics, a milestone hewn from Untersberg marble and the brickwork of the former Romanesque cathedral.
