In the heart of the Altstadt, the Rupertinum is the sister gallery of the Museum der Moderne and is devoted to rotating exhibitions of modern art. There is a strong emphasis on graphic works and photography.

Museum Arbeitswelt
Housed in a converted factory by the river, this excellent museum delves into Steyr’s industrial past with exhibits on working-class history, forced labour during WWII and the rise of the Socialist party.

Fischbehälter
The Fischkbehälter’s cloisters are quite a surprise; built in 1690, they comprise five fish ponds, each centred on a mythological statue. The trickle of water is calming and you can feed the carp (for €0.20).

Käse
This architecturally innovative dairy churns out fresh Wälderkäsle , arranges tours and tastings (€13.50) and runs four-hour cheese-making workshops (€59). See the website for exact dates and times; booking is essential.

Town Hall
Almost all the buildings in Jurisics tér are interesting. The red-and-yellow Town Hall, a mixture of Gothic, Renaissance, baroque and neoclassical styles, has oval paintings on its façade of worldly and heavenly worthies.

Villacher Fahrzeugmuseum
Located 3km outside town, the Villach Automobile Museum focuses on icons of everyday motoring such as the Fiat Topolino, BMW Isetta and about 250 others. Take bus 5179 from the train station to Zauchen (Bundestrasse stop).

Europäisches Hundemuseum
The Europäisches Hundemuseum is the only dog museum in Europe. The odd collection of dog paraphernalia includes paintings, statues and intriguing photos of dogs dressed for war during WWI and WWII, complete with gas masks.

Church of the Holy Spirit
The interior of this 15th-century church is rather dark, but if you time your visit for midday, you’ll be able catch a glimpse of some fine wall and ceiling frescoes by Dorfmeister, as well as a stupendously ornate altar.

House of the Two Moors
Fashioned from two 17th-century peasant houses, the ornate gate of this house is guarded by two large statues, previously painted an exaggerated black to represent the darker-skinned Moors, which are now painted white.

Fidelity Gate
Fidelity Gate at the bottom of the Firewatch Tower (tűztorony) shows Hungaria receiving the civitas fidelissima (Latin for the most loyal citizenry) of Sopron. It was erected in 1922 after that crucial referendum.

Alpinarium Galtür
A museum documenting the event has been built on the spot, the Alpinarium Galtür . Inside you’ll find many poignant reminders of the devastation in the shape of photos, newspaper reports and some incredible video footage.

Alpenzoo
Billing itself as a conservation-oriented zoo, this is where you can get close to alpine wildlife like golden eagles, chamois and ibex. To get there, walk up the hill from Rennweg or take bus W from the Marktplatz.

Relief Von Kärnten
Relief Von Kärnten is a huge relief model of Carinthia housed in Schillerpark, south of the old town. It covers 182 sq metres and depicts the province at a scale of 1:10,000 (1:5000 vertically, to exaggerate the mountains).

Volkskundemuseum
The Folk Life Museum is devoted to folk art and lifestyle. Highlights include 2000 years of traditional clothing in an exhibition that has the interesting take of bringing together ways of life with clothing and belief.

Museum der Völker
Local photographer Gert Chesi set up this museum, showcasing a rich collection of African and Asian ritual art. Rotating exhibitions home in on elements of the collection, such as spiritual Tanzania or African textile art.

Adler Flugschau
Situated between Villach and the Ossiacher See, the castle ruins of Burg Landskron are home to the impressive Adler Flugschau , a 40-minute spectacle featuring these birds of prey. Affenberg , a monkey reserve, is also here.

Spirit of Mozart
A tribute to Mozart stands by the Salzach River in the shape of Marina Abramovic’s Spirit of Mozart , a cluster of chairs surrounding a 15m-high chair, which, as the name suggests, is said to embody the spirit of the composer.

MMKK
This gallery for modern and contemporary art stages three or four excellent temporary exhibitions each year based on its collection of Carinthian and mostly national artists, including the likes of Arnulf Rainer and Hans Staudacher.
