Beneath the Goat Church is the Chapter Hall - part of a 14th-century Benedictine monastery, with frescoes and stone carvings of grotesques, demons, and human moods and emotions.

Bummerlhaus
This Gothic gabled house and former pub takes its name from the figurine of a golden lion, which punters, presumably after one too many, nicknamed Bummerl (small, fat dog).

Mozart – Eine Hommage
Tucked away on Ursulinenplatz is Markus Lüpertz’ Mozart - Eine Hommage, an abstract, one-armed bronze sculpture of the genius, sporting trademark pigtail and the torso of a woman.

Murinsel
Murinsel is a constructed island-cum-bridge of metal and plastic in the middle of the Mur. This modern floating landmark contains a cafe, a kids playground and a small stage.

Churertor
The towers surviving from the old fortifications include the step-gabled Churertor , once the gateway to the bridge that was used to transport salt across the Ill River to Switzerland.

Schloss Grafenegg
About 6km south off Diendorf is Schloss Grafenegg , a castle with the look and feel of an ornate Tudor mansion set in English woods. The castle’s manicured gardens are perfect for a picnic.

Amphitheater Bad Deutsch
Situated about 2km on from Freilichtmuseum Petronell towards Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, the grass-covered amphitheatre formerly seated 15,000. It now hosts a theatre festival over summer.

St Laurentiuskirche
Climb the covered staircase to this Gothic parish church, dominated by an octagonal onion-domed spire. There are stellar views over the town’s rooftops to the Alps beyond from up here.

General’s House
The tower above Heroes Gate is open to visitors and accessible from the Generals House, which contains exhibits on folk art, trades and guilds, and the natural history of the area.

Grünberg Lookout
A cable car whisks visitors 984m up to the local mountain, Grünberg. This was revamped in 2013 and will re-open for summer 2014. Trails also lead up here on an easy walk from the base station.

Nationalparkhaus
The Nationalparkhaus , near Hardegg, has loads of information and an exhibition on the park’s ecology. Hardegg, the natural jump-off point for the park, is not easy to get to without your own transport.

OÖ Feuerwehrmuseum
Opposite the Stiftskirche, this is a childs dream of a museum and an ode to St Florian, patron saint of fire-fighters. The collection comprises historic fire engines, hoses and other paraphernalia.

Wachau Museum
Six kilometres on from Dürnstein is Weissenkirchen . Its centrepiece is a fortified parish church . Directly below this church is the tiny Wachau Museum , which showcases artists of the Danube School.

Linz
Opposite the Dreifaltigkeitssäule in the Hauptplatz is the Altes Rathaus (3) housing Linz-Genesis , unravelling the city’s history and celebrating famous sons such as Johannes Kepler and Anton Bruckner.

Kunsthalle Wien
The Kunsthalle showcases Austrian and international contemporary art. Programs, which run for three to six months, tend to focus mainly on photography, video, film, installation and new media.

Burg Hochosterwitz
The castle has a museum featuring the suit of armour of one Burghauptmann Schenk, who measured 225cm at the tender age of 16. There’s a small cafe serving sausages, soup, rolls and coffee at the top.

Széchenyi Mausoleum
The Széchenyi Mausoleum, the final resting place of István and other family members and a great place of pilgrimage for Hungarians, is in the village cemetery across the road from St Stephen’s Church.

Freilichtmuseum
An hour or two could easily slip by while you explore the 30-odd buildings and their traditional furniture and fittings, which capture the rural culture of Burgenland in the 18th and 19th centuries.
