Happ’s Reptilienzoo
Crocodiles plus all manner of creepers, crawlers and slitherers are here for kids and adults to admire. Some signs are in English.

Panoramastrasse
A scenic road climbs most of the way up Loser (1838m), the main peak overlooking the Altausseer See. Snow chains are required in winter.

The Carmelite convent can be visited, but it’s not really worth the effort; all you see is a chapel and a couple of rooms of mementos.

This parish church combines Gothic and baroque elements, along with the wonderful 13th-century frescoed Romanesque funerary chapel.

Felsenmuseum concentrates its displays on the gemstone serpentine and its local mining (it was first mined in the town in the mid-19th century).

At the opposite end of Rathausplatz from the Katholische Kirche, this is the oldest church in Rust, built between the 12th and 16th centuries.

Katzenturm
Towers surviving from the old fortifications include the 40m-high Katzenturm , where Vorarlberg’s biggest bell (weighing 7500kg) still tolls.

The simple exterior of this early baroque church, built in 1665 as a Jesuit church, belies a complex interior of white walls and black-and-gold baroque altars.

Museum Mondseeland und Pfahlbaumuseum
Next door to the parish church, this museum has displays on Stone Age finds and the monastic culture of the region (Mondsee is a very old monastery site).

Altes Rathaus
Leoben’s connection with the iron industry is seen in the curious town motif displayed on the Altes Rathaus façade, which shows an ostrich eating horseshoes.
