Opened in 2011, MAS is a 10-storey complex that redefines the idea of a museum-gallery. Floors are designed around big-idea themes using a barrage of media, from old master paintings through tribal artefacts to video installations.
Around half the building hosts special exhibitions, so if you're limited for time you can choose between these or the permanent collections. You don't need to pay the entry fee to take the succession of external escalators to MAS' open roof for a remarkable view across Antwerp, and three small free pavilions outside have exhibits on Antwerp’s port, diamond and silver industries.
